Day 5 -- Farewell California

Today was really a bittersweet day. We said goodbye to Uncle John & Aunt Roberta, and hope to see them again, but who knows? Northern California is pretty far from Vermont.

We drove from Yuba City, CA to Elko, Nevada. It was the most dreary scenery I’ve seen in a long time. A lot of tumbleweed, and barren hills, and the drive was endless. Nevada does have a 75 MPH speed limit, which Carl loved, and took as permission to drive 85. The drive was so hypnotic I started falling asleep, so Carl wouldn’t let me drive, but I think the real reason was that he knew I wouldn’t drive fast enough!

Other than that, not too much to report. I did express wonder that anyone ever moved to this part of the country, and cities like Elko and Winnemucca sprang up.

After dinner, I couldn’t resist the casino at the Red Lion, and managed to play black-jack for 20 minutes and made 8 dollars with a stake of only $40.

Tomorrow we’re headed to Idaho Falls, but if we get an early enough start (ha), we might go farther.
